Google: 'Osinbajo is the reason why we are investing in Nigeria'

Google has described Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as an excellent partner; and one whose support has enabled the organisation record some remarkable success in Nigeria. The tech giant made the statement when Doron Avni, Google’s Government Affairs and Public Policy Director, led a delegation from Google Global Services in the United States to the State House in Abuja on Thursday, February 13. Avni said the firm has trained three million Nigerians since its pledge to train 10 million people in Africa. “Obviously, we have an excellent partner here (Prof. Osinbajo) who has been doing God’s work. It is thanks to leading partners like him that we are able to be helpful in communities in which we operate. “We had made a pledge to train 10 million people in Africa by 2022. I am happy to report to you that so far we have trained more than 5 million people. Most important is the fact that out of those 5 million, 3 million are Nigerians. “With the collaboration that we have with the Ministry...

Bitcoin is not real money – US Judge

Bitcoin, a Florida judge says, is not real money. Ironically, that could provide a boost to use of the crypto-currency which has remained in the shadows of the financial system. The July 22 ruling by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Teresa Pooler means that no specific license is needed to buy and sell bitcoins. The judge dismissed a case against Michel Espinoza, who had faced money laundering and other criminal charges for attempting to sell $1,500 worth of bitcoins to an undercover agent who told the defendant he was going to use the virtual money to buy stolen credit card numbers. Espinoza’s lawyer Rene Palomino said the judge acknowledged that it was not illegal to sell one’s property and ruled that this did not constitute running an unauthorized financial service. “He was selling his own personal bitcoins,” Palomino said. “This decision clears the way for you to do that in the state of the Florida without a money transmitting license.” In her ruling, Pooler said, “this court...

BlackBerry just announced its second-ever Android smartphone and its an Alcatel clone

BlackBerry  has just revealed its first smartphone to follow the Priv, the awfully named  DTEK50. In something of a surprise move (the phone has been leaked for a while now), the device appears to be built by Alcatel, given it’ s virtually identical to that company’s  Idol 4S. The specs certainly are identical: Snapdragon 617 3GB RAM 16 GB Storage 5.2-inch QHD display Micro-USB MicroSD expansion 13MP Rear Camera with phase detection I happen to be reviewing that exact phone at the moment, and it’s a solid device, but I can’t help but feel a little disappointed BlackBerry didn’t choose to create something original after they took a step in the right direction with the Priv. Also, there’s definitely no physical keyboard on this one. Then again, this is meant to be a budget device. The DTEK50 will retail for $299. BlackBerry is trying to differentiate itself from Alcatel – and other smartphones – by calling the DTEK50 “the world’s most secure An...

The relationship pre-dates Nigeria's independence and as soon as we got our independence we opened a mission in New Delhi. ``Our relationship cuts across education, military, trade manufacturing and technology. I recall schooling at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington from 1970 to 1973 and the significant role India played in establishing the Nigerian Defence Academy. ``Certainly, you are also the biggest buyer of Nigeria's crude oil today. We need mo...

The $196 per share offer is a big hike on its closing price from Friday,  $131.08 .
