Microsoft to buy LinkedIn for $26.2B in cash, makes big move into enterprise social media

Huge news today in the world of M&A in enterprise and social networking services: Microsoft  has announced that it is  acquiring LinkedIn , the social network for professionals with some 433 million users, for $26.2 billion, or $196 per share, in cash. The transaction has already been approved by both boards, but it must still get regulatory and other approvals. If for some reason the deal does not go through, LinkedIn will have to pay Microsoft a $725 million termination fee, according to  Microsoft’s SEC filing  detailing the merger. The $196 per share offer is a big hike on its closing price from Friday,  $131.08 . (And in pre-market trading, unsurprisingly, LinkedIn’s stock has nearly crept up 64 percent to reach the share price Microsoft is paying. Microsoft’s price is  down 4 percent  to $49.66 in pre-market trading.) LinkedIn is keeping its branding and product, and it will become a part of Microsoft’s productivi...

What is N-Power?

Skills and knowledge are the driving forces of economic growth and social development. Despite the current high level of unemployment, harnessing Nigeria’s young demography through appropriate skill development efforts provides an opportunity to achieve inclusion and productivity within the country.  Large-scale skill development is the main policy thrust of the N-Power Programme. N-Power is also linked to the Federal Government’s policies in the economic, employment and social development arenas. N-Power addresses the challenge of youth unemployment by providing a structure for large scale and relevant work skills acquisition and development while linking its core and outcomes to fixing inadequate public services and stimulating the larger economy. The modular programmes under N-Power will ensure that each participant will learn and practice most of what is necessary to find or create work. The N-Power Teacher Corp involves a massive deployment of 500,000 trained graduates...

Confusion At PDP Headquarters As Police Lock Out Ali Modu Sheriff

There was a pandemonium at the National secretariat of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja early this morning as the controversial former Chairman of the party , Ali Modu Sherif was barred from gaining access into the secretariat by the armed policemen stationed at the building.     Modu stormed the Headquarters of the party as early as 7.00am on Monday with a retinue of supporters with the view to assuming office as the chairman despite the inauguration of the Ahmed Markafi led caretaker committee.  Trouble started when his convoy was prevented from driving into the premises of the secretariat by the police. The standoff situation forced Sheriff to come down from his jeep and address a few journalists who were around that he was shocked that he was prevented from entering his office as chairperson of the party. He pointed out that he relied on the court judgement which was delivered in Lagos that affirmed him as the authentic chairman of...

Ogoni Clean-up: MEND Commends Buhari, Brands Jonathan A Spectacular Failure

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has commended the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for showing political will by starting the Ogoniland,  as recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The group, which lists the clean-up of Ogoniland as one of the reasons for its agitation, said successive governments-civilian and military-as well as international oil companies have done little to protect and sustain the environment since oil was discovered in the region. MEND's position was contained in a statement made available to SaharaReporters. The group was particularly critical of former President Goodluck Jonathan, a Niger Delta indigene, whom it branded a spectacular failure over his handling of the region's numerous environmental challenges. "It is in the light of this premise, but particularly because of the colossal failure of former President Goodluck Jonathan-an indigene of the region who was at t...

Hate speech and threat to Life by Governor Nasiru El-Rufai against Distinguished Senator Shehu Sani

Our attention has been drawn to a hate speech and threat to life made by Governor Nasiru El-Rufai against distinguished Senator Shehu Sani in the Governor's circus christened as Town Hall meeting in Giwa Local Government on 4th June 2016. The Governor reliably and evidently referred to Senator Sani, Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Isa Ashiru Kudan as "Ants he will match and crush". We could have easily dismissed or ignore this statement as Tantrums of an accidental Governor high on weekend Marijuana, but we decided not to take things for granted in view of the petit Governor mean and vicious history and his allergy to criticism. Also fresh in our mind is the mass killings and burial of members of the Islamic movement in Zaria last December.  We view his unguarded and provocative utterances as nothing but a hate speech and a direct threat to the Life of Senator Sani and others whom the Governor perceived as his "enemies". We hold Governor Nasiru El-Rufai personally r...
